The one named female character is a sort of forest spirit, and is great. But, perhaps because the movie's set in a monastery, there are no other named female characters. (Unless maybe you count the cat.)

I agree. Monastic life is not going to give you access to a great deal of conversation with women. There were female villagers and such in the movie, but they weren't characters per se.

Assuming that the characters don't have to be human, Pangur Bán (the cat) is a named female. I'd definitely consider her to be a character integral to the story. You could even loosely interpret some of her interactions with Aisling as a conversation - although that one is a little bit dodgy.
