-There a 3 women with speaking roles:
1)Crewe's wife Lena, played by Courtney Cox
2)The Warden's receptionist Lynette, played by Cloris Leachman
3)A news anchor who, appears in one scene (the actor is unknown to myself).
-Other females are background characters.
- No women talk to other women.
- Lena's character comes across as financially successful, controlling and materialistic (such personalities exist however I thought it worth a mention).
- The female news anchor dresses unlike female news anchor in reality (in Australia at least)i.e. plunging neckline revealing cleavage.
- Lynette's role is to focus her attention on Crewe as a sexual interest. One scene involves Lynette giving Crewe information in return for him acting out her fantasy's of his "tighty whities" commercials.
-Women who are focused on (but do not have a speaking role) include:
1) A women in a bikini swimming through and then stepping out of a pool (long shot of her body, then a medium/close up of her thighs and backside).
2)A women who is being scanned with a metal detector before entering the football grounds (close up of her torso, also her bra is apparent)
Throughout the film there a scenes and references which I feel devalue women, several of them include:
-"Hello ladies" (addressing men)
-Requests for male characters to stop 'acting like women'.
-Interactions between inmates and guard cheerleaders wherein inmates are stoped in their tracks and begin to chat up the women.
Also:
-Throughout the film stereotypes about homosexuals and same-sex intimacy are portrayed as comedy.
-The word "nigger" is used as a power word, both to offend and praise...
