Bechdel Test Movie List

There are two named female chacraters in the film, Casey and Athena. They have several conversations that do not revolve around a man. They discuss Tomorrowland and the bad guys that are after them.

This one I wasn't totally sure about. Athena, after all, isn't actually female. Sure, she reads female, but does she really count? Although there is lot that can be said about her being a creation of Nixon, her programing, etc.

I do feel that this movie isn't getting the credit it deserves, btw. Watching it in conjunction with Fury Road gave a lot to think about. I actually feel like they are really good companion films.

@Carter, even if Athena isn't a human she's a female character. Altough, Cassey also talks to the employee of the store about the pin. Then: PASS.

Tomorrowland is the perfect example of a movie that technically shouldn't pass the test even though it wholeheartedly embraces everything the test stands for. Tomorrowland features two strong, competent and compelling female characters (Casey and Athena) who drive almost the entire plot of the film - there are several scenes featuring just the two of them and no male characters at all. However, strictly speaking, only Casey is actually female. Athena is a robot and therefore not really female at all. (The store owner is also a robot and therefore not technically female either). So let's throw Tomorrowland on the ever-growing pile of films that expose the inadequacies of the Bechdel Test.

If you'll recall, the employee of the store is also a robot.

This does beg the interesting question about whether or not robots, and other things that don't actually have genders, can really be considered male or female.

Disagree on the basis that Athena was a robot. Here is why: if we are to assume that Athena is a girl, then we also have to accept that there was a very strong relationship (borderline creepy) between Frank, a much older character, and the pre-pubescent Athena character. Is that situation really what a parent wants to explain to a (PG-13) kid?

Personally if played by a female actress, then it's a female character even if it is a robot. They could have made Athena a boy but they didn't Passes with flying colors

The older Frank does not have a borderline creepy relationship with Athena. He is mad at her for letting his younger self believe she was a real girl and letting his younger self fall in love with her.

A robot, played by a female actress or otherwise, should not count as passing the Bechdel test. The test clearly states "women". Not "feminine machinery", not "females of arbitrary species". The character must be a woman.

Yes, they could have had a boy play the robot. But they also could have had a scene between Casey and her mother. Or they could have given names to the women on the train on the way to the spaceport.

I am sorry, but speaking strictly, then movies like Zootopia, and a lot of movies where humans are not the characters, will not pass the test; because the test require of two woman. But that is not the essence of the test, so, Athena being a female character, even when she is not a woman, is valid for overcome the test. So, Tomorrowland is a movie which passes the test.
