The central character of this important Hindi film is Kaveriamma, a life-long caretaker of two children (now grown)--Mohan and Gita (also main characters). Mohan returns to India from America to reunite with Kaveriamma, but Gita wants to keep Kaveriamma for herself. In several plot-relevant scenes, Kaveriamma talks with a female member of the "panchayat" (five-member village council) named Fatima about everything from the function of NASA satellites to Kaveriamma's plans to settle the struggle between Gita and Mohan. Kaveriamma also talks to Gita about the late rent payment of a tenant on Gita's property and about toning down Gita's outspoken personality to accommodate people's need for time to change their views. Gita responds, "Habits can be altered over time, but narrow opinions and beliefs cannot be."
