I believe in one scene, Bobby Byrd's mom and sister (named Mrs. Byrd and Sarah Byrd on the IMDb cast list) exchange a couple words about James joining their church choir.
Later, James' wife (DeeDee) talks to his ex (I think ex wife but I'm not sure) (Velma Brown), and first they talk about the rash on one of their sons' faces and then Velma really snarkily says "Welcome to the family," clearly indicating that she doesn't think James is a good person to be with, so it's pretty much talking about boys/men the whole conversation.
