Two significant conversations between named women. Tess and Alma have a brief conversation when Tess and Sam come home after having been married. It's about various things but notably Alma doesn't talk to or about Sam ("has Miss Harding been in an accident?" "I put all the messages on your desk").
Another longer conversation is between Tess and Aunt Ellen. The topic is that Ellen is getting married. It also touches upon men ("I wanted him to be my bridesmaid - I was his best man") but most of the conversation is about the women in their own right ("You're my woman of the century - I always felt you were above marriage", "This time I want to be the prize myself").
