The main character is Natalie Merrit. She talks to Mrs. Ruth Ashboro and Brenda about her mother Maryann, the cat Margaret, moving to the new town and taking care of the stray animals. In addition, Mrs. Ashboro and Brenda talk about Brenda's mortgage. Brenda also talks to Jan about her animals getting loose at night.
