There are several prominent, named female characters: Bloody Mary, Liat, and Nellie.

However, Bloody Mary only interacts with her daughter Liat in negotiating her marriage, first to John, and then to another American. Bloody Mary talks to Liat when pulling her away from Cable, but Liat never says anything back to her (and never really says anything other than a little French to Cable).

Nellie talks to a friend of hers, Gracie, but it's about whether to continue being in a relationship with Emile.

Bloody Mary and Liat (well, technically only Bloody Mary) ask Nellie about whether John is alive, and Nellie asks who they are, causing Bloody Mary to introduce herself and Liat. Nellie, learning that Liat is the one John loved and that Liat only wants to marry John, comforts her over John's death. Though the introduction of names might count, it's only a means for Nellie to realize who Liat is in significance to John.

The only thing that could be considered a pass is when Nellie communicates with Emile's children, one of whom, Ngana, is a girl. She speaks to both of them in French asking, "Do you (all) understand me?" and Ngana responds, "Yes, I undertand." Jerome, his other child, wanders away, and Nellie works out her French pronunciation of "table" and Ngana says the correct pronunciation for her, whereupon Nellie thanks her and calls Jerome over to the dinner table.

It's dubious because neither Ngana nor Jerome are particular fleshed out characters by gender, just merely the young children of Emile, who initially cause conflict for Nellie due to their race.

I'd give it a dubious pass.
