The women in Ward 1 (along with the men) discuss living conditions (including but not limited to what to do about the men of Ward 3). The women of Ward 1 tend to one of their murdered sisters as a group. The Doctor's Wife and the Woman with Dark Glasses discuss the former's sense of sight (though this conversation is a result of the Doctor's Wife walking in on the Woman with Dark Glasses having sex with the Doctor). The Doctor's Wife, the Woman with Dark Glasses and the First Blind Man's Wife shower in the rain together and discuss one another's bodies/body images.

It's an interesting example of a film that clearly passes the test, having so many strong female characters (including the main one, who leads all the blind people, saving and fighting for them, all tough she has plenty of issues of her own - she is not all that selfless in the begining of it, therefore she is complete as a woman and a character). but if you consider that the women who talk to each other must be named, the movie fails - simply because there are no characters with names in the whole film. I think that's because it is a film about the depths of human behavior and existence, not about some people or some individual tragedy, so names are unrequired. isn't that amazing? Saramago's nailed it.
