This movie has at least two named female characters--Dong'er (played by Gong Li) and Yuan Mong Ling (played by Chan Ying Cheung).
Gong Li's character is later reincarnated as the contemporary bit part actress Lili Zhu. Mong Ling Yuan is the celebrated actress playing the lead role in the same movie. The two characters argue when Lili sneezes, "ruining" Mong Ling's scene. Later, when Lili returns to the set after an attempted murder by the male lead, Bai Yunfei, Mong Ling yells at her for disrupting her amazing acting scene (despite her being, in reality, a terrible actress). Lili responds saying that she doesn't care, causing Mong Ling to refuse to continue shooting.
