This movie has three leads, two of which are women. The movie is a classic, and in a very minimalist style that it makes that none of the main characters would have names.

The movie is about these two women, mother and daughter-in-law, who survive through the feudal era in Japan by luring lost samurai to their deaths and selling their armor. Their tranquility is interrupted by the return of their neighbor, Hachi, who has fled the wars, but failed to also bring back the Old Woman's son, Kichi.

The Old Woman is threatened by the Young Woman's growing attraction to Hachi, which she believes will result in her abandonment and inability to continue to survive without a killing partner.

The women have multiple conversations about topics that do not include men.

Were it not for the naming issue, this movie would pass all three criteria. However, it's only the women who lack names: the lead "Old Woman" and "Young Woman" (or alternately, "Kichi's Mother" and "Kichi's Wife", while the third lead, Hachi, is named, the dead son/husband, Kichi, is named, and the armor seller, Ushi, is named.

Mary disagreed with the rating and said:
The 2 fierce women protagonists talk extensively, as they try to survive by selling looted armor. True, they are not named. But the film passes on all other grounds, as an unforgettable depiction of women's ingenuity, survival, eroticism, and ferociity.
