The majority of the movie is a thinly veiled power struggle between Theo and Matthew over Isabelle. At one point, Isabelle and her mother discuss how neither she nor Theo told their mother that Matthew was coming over for dinner. However, "discuss" is a very generous word here. Her mother merely responds in French regarding how little food she had prepared before Isabelle and Theo turn their attention back to each other.
