Although I personally consider all "women's work" (including childrearing and "domestic" jobs like cleaning) to be suspect, this movie is about a yuppie-turned-mommy left with the care of a (female) toddler. The protagonist spends a great deal of time talking to the baby, then forms a baby food company.

I hadn't seen this movie in years so I watched it last night. I believe the movie does pass the Bechdel test, but I was disappointed in the uber-whiteness. It doesn't pass the racial Bechdel test at all. In fact, it's so uber-white, (like nobody in a single meeting of executives was a PoC?), that the disappointment overshadows the empowerment message. All we end up seeing is white privilege played out as it is in real life. Sad.

I think Roland is either really young or has the nostalgia glasses on but YES. In 1987 it was entirely possible to have a large corporation with a huge board of directors thats entirely white. And even one thats entirely male. The whole point of 80's feminist movies is that yes women can do the job but more often than not they will pushed back and abused. Thats the whole plot of 9 to 5. Wesley Snipes complains in Jungle Fever that even though its the 90's he's the only black executive in a company. Thats what makes for good cinema, breaking down these barriers. Trading Places deals with the same issues, but in a comedic manner.
