There are two if we count the mermaid as a female character. Which seems fair, but it should be noted she is not a human women--does the test specify?

It should be noted that, even if the mermaid does count as a female character on the same level as human women, she only gets a name because a man gives it to her. Without him, she has literally no identity to the audience.

I disagree with Roxann. The intent of the whole thing about the character being named is to ensure that the character being referred to is one that plays a major and significant role in the plot, and the mermaid in this movie certainly does that. A character does not need to have a name in order to have an identity to the audience, and she would be in the same position as far as her status as a main character even if she hadn't been given a name.

According to the logic shown here, if a girl's father names her she can't be a major female character, and any movie without humans in it automatically fails the test. I think non-human females should qualify.
