In its defense, they purposefully wrote it with no female characters to increase the sense of isolation. And frankly, I'd rather have no females in a film than token one-dimensional female characters that serve no purpose other than bringing a pair of boobs to the scene.

Not to mention the gender switch test: how would this movie have worked with female characters? It would have been nauseating quasi-porn rape metaphor, that's how. Yeah, it's all guys -- who all get consumed by an assimilating monster (that you could even argue is feminine in a way...) And since the theme is Cold War paranoia, I'm not sure how womwn would have fit into that, or why any women viewers would want them to...

I was really disappointing with the lack of at least one female character. I think a strong non-sexualized female scientist could have been a good idea. Alien had a female lead that worked great, a show like The X-File had an episode matching this movie with females in it, which was also a success. The movie Mindhunters, also working off of isolation and paranoia had two female characters in their small group. There's no reason females couldn't have fitted in and shown that you don't need just men to be taken seriously.

Riply from the Alien franchise showed us how a great female character can be included in a similar situation. Space is as isolated as Antarctica. I love the movie but I disagree with the comments that including a woman would not have worked. The best female characters are those that are written as human, not necessarily female. Any of the characters in the film could have been female and the movie would still be great.
