Bechdel Test Movie List

Though there are plenty of female characters, at no point do they talk to each other about things other than men.

Not that it changes the rating, but worth noting that (as I remember it) men also only talk to each other about women. So it's balanced.

I'm pretty sure that there's a conversation between Marie and Sally where they weren't talking about men.
And I think that Sally asked one of Harry's girlfriends where she worked.

Sally and Marie talk about Harry's girlfriend's business in the kitchen.

(At Marie and Jess's wedding. Harry and Sally are best-man and bridesmaid.)

I've updated the rating from 2/3 to 3/3.

Also, just watched the film again on TV - Sally talks to Marie about her wedding dress. Granted, it alludes to a man (the groom, Jesse), but it is technically a discussion about a dress.

So I just watched the whole film with the Bechdel test in mind. While there are a number of spurious conversations between women that aren't directly about a man, there is no real conversation. Additionally, even when the conversation isn't directly about a man, it's indirectly about a man. HOWEVER, as noted above, the movie also fails the reverse Bechdel test, in that two men don't talk with each other about anything that isn't a woman. There's a shallow, small-talkish conversation between Harry and Joe, but during that conversation Joe introduces Sally to Harry.

All of that said, I think this is a film where the Bechdel test is a poor measure of gender equality. As the title suggests, the movie is about the relationship between Harry and Sally, and therefore all of the dialog was written to develop that relationship.

Sally: I'm leaving.
Marie: You'll never find a cab.

It definitely passes on the basis of this conversation.
