Have you looked at the imdb page? There's a truckload of named female characters, they probably don't talk but they're still there.

Mary Elizabeth Barrett ... Fanny Clark
Hope Elizabeth Reeves ... Elizabeth

this is a case where i think the movie should be exempt from the test. given that the movie is a historical period piece set in a time when there was rampant inequlaity between men and women especially out west where the movie takes place it would be inaccurate to have anything not related.

No exceptions. failing the Bechdel test isn't saying the movie is bad or sexist, it's just that so few movies pass the test. TWBB is a great movie about men. We need more great movies about women.

Sigh: where do I begin with your comment? Women were more unequal in the past but they were still 50 percent of the population back then and they still had convos not centered around men, and they had names back then too. Just because they were considered inferior doesn't that they didn't have stories or a presence, influence on history, and didn't have thoughts idea, actions worthy of being portrayed. May be a great film, but still fails the the test.

Verlaine76, I agree 100%. It's a great movie about a bunch of fragile men and their fails, most of them are caused by what is expected from them as men. It just doesn't portray women almost at all, but they have so many multidimensional male characters that makes it a great film

"sigh" said exactly what I was thinking. I read on too many of these pages that the film is bad or chauvinist to "fail" the test. That's simply not true. A film isn't inherently bad if its all about men. The test only serves to point out a macro related issue. We absolutely need more films about women. And the films about men and women have to be less men dominated. However you can't really use the test to condemn any one movie or even prove its sexist.
