There are two female characters, Maria and Maria's doppelgänger. They do not speak to each other. This, of course, depends on whether a female robot counts as being a female character, but I would say that it should (c.f. C3PO (Starwars), Bender (Futurama), or Commander Data (Star Trek) being identifiably "male" robots).

Yes, the 'robot' was actually named Hel after the protagonists mother and was made out of living parts and endowed with artificial intelligence. She was more like a Cylon than a droid. Definitely a 1 out of 3.
